The Sixtieth Street Elementary School in Niagara Falls undertook the project to house an aquarium tank containing lake sturgeon for the purpose of studying their history, uniqueness and reasons for the demise of the lake sturgeon in Lake Ontario. Fifth graders traveled by bus to the Fish Hatchery in Costantia, which is on Oneida Lake, to pick up the sturgeon for the school project. The students also toured the “Threatened and Endangered Species Exhibit” at the Niagara Falls Aquarium which assisted the students in learning more about the care and feeding of the sturgeon in captivity. A representative from U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service came into the school to show the students how to weigh and measure the length of the sturgeon to assist in charting the growth.
